The Light Before They Die simulates the ethereal glow of dying coral reefs using fiber optics and programmable lighting. Delicate strands rise like bioluminescent coral, glowing softly in response to the presence of visitors. As someone approaches, the installation gently comes to life. But a single touch causes the lights to dim and fade—an unsettling reaction meant to provoke reflection.
Inspired by the phenomenon of coral fluorescence, an emergency response that corals exhibit when under extreme stress, this project challenges the viewer’s instinct to reach out. While the glowing effect may appear beautiful, it is in fact a sign of ecological distress, a final cry for help before coral death.
By inviting visitors to interact and then quietly resisting their touch, the sculpture becomes a poignant reminder of the fragility of marine ecosystems. It asks us to reconsider our relationship with nature. Through this encounter, the corals seem to whisper, “Look at me. Please, notice. But don’t interfere.”
